Mrs Ponter.
.....As promised, and here to kick start our blog, is a collection of pictures from our recent science experiment, which recreated the eruption of a volcano.

Having spent the previous two weeks designing and constructing our own volcanoes from a collection of different materials in DT, we decided it would be a good idea to carry our the eruption experiment.

It involved mixing a combination of water, baking soda and vinegar. We were all very excited when we saw what was happening. Shrieks of "my volcano is erupting" could be heard from across the playground!

As the mixture began to froth, fizz, foam and gradually rise, we saw how the ingredients in the mixture were reacting.

The bubbles created were filled with carbon dioxide.

Carbon dioxide, which is a gas, formed when the vinegar (an acid) reacted with the baking soda (an alkaline).

Even though it wasn't the real thing, we think that we did a good job replicating a real eruption!

In case you want to try it at home, here is what we did...

To Make Your Volcano Erupt:
  1. Place the volcano on a pan or tray (or you'll get lava all over the place!)
  2. Fill the volcano with 2 tablespoons of water and stir in a tablespoon of baking soda until it dissolves.
  3. Measure 2 tablespoons of vinegar into a separate cup.
  4. Pour the vinegar, all at once into the water/baking soda mixture and watch your lava bubble up!
Below you will see the pictures of the experiment, the volcano designs are good too!

Welcome to the new blog of Class LP and MP!

So why have we chosen to start a blog? Well, it is a chance for us to share with the world the work that we do in Year 3.

This is a first for Mrs Ponter and Miss Pettinger too....so we are hoping there will be no technical hitches.

So here it goes!

Coming soon...a sample of work from our recent volcano mini project.....
